Steam Sailing Ship "L'Amerique"
Following a 12 day voyage in steerage class aboard the French steam ship L'Amerique, Hermann arrived in New York, at Castle Garden, which eventually became known as Ellis Island on Sept. 8, 1880. He was 17 years old, spoke no English, had no profession, and little education. He was to find a cousin, Franz-Anton Resch, who was working at the Ansonia Clock Co. However, Resch had moved to Connecticut between Hermann's last letter, and his arrival in the U.S. It would be several months, and a few letters home before the two saw each other.
